May 19th -- STICK IT TO THE OIL COMPANIES DAY

IT HAS BEEN CALCULATED THAT IF EVERYONE IN THE UNITED STATES DID NOT PURCHASE A DROP OF GASOLINE FOR ONE DAY AND ALL AT THE SAME TIME, THE OIL COMPANIES WOULD CHOKE ON THEIR STOCKPILES. AT THE SAME TIME IT WOULD HIT THE ENTIRE INDUSTRY WITH A NET LOSS OF OVER 4.6 BILLION DOLLARS WHICH AFFECTS THE BOTTOM LINES OF THE OIL COMPANIES. THEREFORE MAY 19TH HAS BEEN FORMALLY DECLARED “STICK IT TO THEM DAY" AND THE PEOPLE OF THIS NATION SHOULD NOT BUY A SINGLE DROP OF GASOLINE THAT DAY. THE ONLY WAY THIS CAN BE DONE IS IF YOU FORWARD THIS E-MAIL TO AS MANY PEOPLE AS YOU CAN AND AS QUICKLY AS YOU CAN TO GET THE WORD OUT. WAITING ON THIS ADMINISTRATION TO STEP IN AND CONTROL THE PRICES IS NOT GOING TO HAPPEN. WHAT HAPPENED TO THE REDUCTION AND CONTROL IN PRICES THAT THE ARAB NATIONS PROMISED TWO WEEKS AGO? REMEMBER ONE THING, NOT ONLY IS THE PRICE OF GASOLINE GOING UP BUT AT THE SAME TIME AIRLINES ARE FORCED TO RAISE THEIR PRICES, TRUCKING COMPANIES ARE FORCED TO RAISE THEIR PRICES WHICH EFFECTS PRICES ON EVERYTHING THAT IS SHIPPED. THINGS LIKE FOOD, CLOTHING, BUILDING MATERIALS, MEDICAL SUPPLIES ETC. WHO PAYS IN THE END? WE DO! WE CAN MAKE A DIFFERENCE. IF THEY DON’T GET THE MESSAGE AFTER ONE DAY, WE WILL DO IT AGAIN AND AGAIN. SO DO YOUR PART AND SPREAD THE WORD. FORWARD THIS MESSAGE TO EVERYONE YOU KNOW. MARK YOUR CALENDARS AND MAKE MAY 19TH A DAY THAT THE CITIZENS OF THE UNITED STATES SAY “ENOUGH IS ENOUGH”

GO ELECTRIC Ads on Real Rock 101.1

Look for our ad to be playing this weekend on WJRR Real Rock 101.1 !

11/29/03    Todays's Orlando Sentinel ran an extensive article on the current legal quagmire involving scooters. Encouraging news was provided on the efforts of State Representative Randy Johnson to rectify the situation in favor of electric scooter riders. We encourage you to voice your support to him and your own legislators. Unfortunately, the article did not make clear the distinctions and advantages of electric vs. gas scooters, nor did it mention the fully legal status of electric bikes. The article is at http://www.orlandosentinel.com/news/local/osceola/orl-locscooters29112903nov29,1,1286755.story?coll=orl-home-headlines

11/10/03

Go Electric has contacted our local central Florida state legislators to try to create specific authorization for scooter use on the roads and or sidewalks, similar to what bike, electric bikes, and Segways enjoy.  Representative Bruce Anton led the way with a rapid and cooperative response.  We encourage you to write as well.  Links to our representatives can be found at: http://www.myfloridahouse.com/Legislators.aspx

An example letter follows:

Dear Mr/Ms Lesgislator/Commissioner:

As you know as a citizen of this area, we are mired in traffic congestion, and seem headed towards a smog and gridlock meltdown akin to that experienced in Los Angeles.

In response to these problems, electric scooters have become popular in California, and are now coming to Florida.   These vehicles offer the chance to cut down on the number of large, gas guzzling, and emission producing vehicles on our roads, while offering a low-cost transportation option to many of our citizens.  The vehicles in question go at speeds less than 20-25 mph (many closer to 10-15 mph), analogous to the speeds used by varying levels of bicycle riders

Unfortunately, there are regulatory limitations to the progress in this area.  Some of this is just a lag between a new phenomenon and current laws, and some is a backlash to noisy, messy, and dangerous go-peds, which are item-non-gratis in many communities.  Recently, in response to a local community law enforcement query (no doubt motivated by the go-peds), our attorney general produced an interpretive statement on this issue (http://www.myfloridahouse.com/legislatorinfo.aspx?mid=4207).  My reading of this tends to tighten the current grey areas around electric scooters, giving police the power to harass reponsible riders, and disallowing use on roads, bikepaths, and sidewalks. There is the possibility of interpreting electric scooters as "Electric Personal Assistive Mobility Devices", a category encompassing electric wheelchairs and "Segway" devices traveling up to 20 mph, which are actually wider and more intrusive to pedestrians and cars, but are allowed to be used freely.  Electric bicycles, another desirable transportation product, are covered/protected by current laws, as are mopeds and motorcycles faster than 30 mph (whether gas or electric, which can be registered and used by licensed drivers).

Mr. Crist concludes his statement by suggesting legislative clarification of this issue, which is where you most directly come in.  This could either make, or break, practical electric transportation in our community, which so desperately needs any help it can get.  I urge you to present and support supportive legislation allowing -- and even encouraging in any way possible -- responsible use of electric scooters, as well as any and all nonautomobile transportation options in Florida.  A model ordinance used in California is also included below for your information (http://www.electric-bikes.com/ordinance.htm).

Thank you for your consideration and efforts on our community, and with regards to the environment, our world's, behalf.

11/10/03    Today, Jim Phillips on Real Radio 104.1 "The Phillips Phile" was talking about getting a moped, and spoke with Go Electric about the advantages of getting an electric bike or scooter.  Go Jim!
